Closing the Loop in HCI and Biomedical Informatics Research

In this talk, I will discuss translating HCI into biomedical informatics research to deliver outcomes that matter to both fields and the patients. To illustrate this point, I will introduce the InfoMediator, which helps patients learn clinical expertise in online health communities. I will discuss how social, technical, and biomedical perspectives come together to develop this system. The social perspective here involves understanding the social dynamics among patients and moderators in online health communities. I will then translate these findings to technical implications in developing the InfoMediator. The biomedical perspective will help us evaluate the InfoMediator with the outcomes meaningful to patients and the field. I will end the talk with how HCI and biomedical informatics research inform one another, closing the loop in social, technical, and biomedical perspectives in health technologies research.

About the Speaker

Jina Huh is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Media and Information at Michigan State University. She will be joining the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of California San Diego as an Assistant Professor this fall. In her research, she studies and develops technologies for everyday health management. She received the NIH National Library of Medicine Career Development Award (K01) to develop research in helping patients gain patient as well as clinical expertise in online health communities. She also studies mobile health applications to improve daily health management, applications to enhance social support in online health communities, and peer-patient generated videos to deliver social support. She received best paper awards and honorable mention at the International Medical Informatics Association Yearbook, American Medical Informatics Association, and ACM CHI. She received the National Library of Medicine postdoctoral fellowship in biomedical informatics at the University of Washington School of Medicine. She received her PhD from the University of Michigan School of Information with a specialization in Human-Computer Interaction, a Masters in Human-Computer Interaction from Carnegie Mellon University, and a BA in Multimedia Design from Korea National University of Arts.
