Asylum-Seekers at the US-Mexico Border: Cross-Agency Collaboration for a Humanitarian Crisis

Thousands of asylum-seekers present to the U.S. border each year. In the past decade, the composition of migrants has changed from healthy young men seeking employment to predominantly families with children who are fleeing violence and unsafe conditions in their home countries. Migrants on both sides of the U.S. and Mexico border have a variety of physical and mental health needs. The asylum-seekers are also challenged by the immigration system within the U.S., including the conditions in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention. Over the last year, UCSD, the County Health and Human Services, non-profit agencies, and volunteers have worked to support the asylum-seekers on both sides of the San Diego-Tijuana Border. The challenges and successes of these efforts will be described.

About the Speaker

Dr. Hill, MD, MPH is a Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health at UCSD. She is Director of the UCSD/SDSU General Preventive Medicine Residency, and Senior Staff Physician at San Diego Family Care. She is the Director of the UCSD Training, Research and Education for Driving Safety (treds.ucsd.edu), Co-Directs (with Henrik Christensen) the Center for Human and Urban Mobility, and is the site PI of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety LongROAD study (San Diego site). She has directed the Refugee Health Assessment Program since 2008, and is the Executive Director of the Asylum Seeker Health Program since December 24, 2018.
