Abstract:

Designing a Psycho-Social Curriculum for Teaching the Climate Crisis

Life on earth is facing wrenching changes within our lifetimes. A near total consensus amongst climate scientists is that dramatic action must be taken to reduce C02 emissions over the next decade. But that is not yet happening. Better understanding how to respond to the climate crisis requires delving into the role played by human psychology: What does it take to shift people from not caring, or even from outright denial, to believing in anthropogenic global heating? And what does it take to shift the many people who believe the facts to joining together in collective action to challenge the stasis of major institutions and political systems? I will discuss the thematic and structural decisions that went into the design of my undergraduate class.

Biography:

I am a professor in the UCSD Psychology department. My research lab, which has has been funded by the NIH for 13 years, has focussed on how we stop our response tendencies, i.e. executive function. We develop behavioral paradigms in humans and study the human brain with functional MRI, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, and EEG/deep brain recording. We also study neurological patients, including those with Parkinson’s disease. I also pursue scholarly work on the psycho-social aspects of the climate crisis, and also teach on the topic. I am the faculty mentor to the Green New Deal at UC San Diego climate action and climate justice movement, and I am also the current chair of faculty welfare in the UC San Diego academic senate.
