This week, DDI at UCSD Design Lab’s Center for Health kicked off their first “Community Challenges” presenting new designs for supporting people with diabetes.
Two teams presented concepts to “reimagine diabetes support” to over 50 participants from industry, foundation and community leaders.
The first team worked directly with founder Ben West of T1Pal to simplify the sharing of glucose and insulin data through Nightscout. This team had to navigate the DIY landscape by coming up with creative ways to conduct user research and listen to community needs. Their discoveries and early designs were shared along with accolades from Mr. West on their ability to translate these findings into actionable prototypes.

The second team worked directly with the head of DDI, Dr. Lars Mueller and mentor Gayle Lorenzi, RN, CDE to develop an interactive tool to help people with diabetes understand the relationship between insulin dosing and timing. This tool caught the attention of many in the ‘zoom room’ as it lays out the potential future path for transforming diabetes education from paper to digital.
