Contribute to the World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024 Legacy Program

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to submit your project and join our first World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024 Campus Convening on December 9, 2022, held at the UCSD Design Lab in the Design and Innovation building between 2.00-5.00pm.

The Design Lab at UC San Diego is a founding partner of World Design Capital 2024 program and is leading the Legacy Program, which involves the curation of legacy projects. As part of WDC 2024 legacy programming strategy, we intend to identify, assess, select, and resource multinational legacy programs ensuring that the designation catalyzes and accelerates meaningful design transformation in our transborder, multinational region.

During the bid and site visit phases, some preliminary community outreach and engagement was conducted, which identified potential initiatives/programs. However, it is imperative during this new phase of implementation that potential, current, and new research-action projects are identified within the regional network, to include colleagues in San Diego and Tijuana in order to leverage the skills and talents at our academic institutions. 

The above will be known as the Design 2 Action Initiative.

Via this form, we are providing an opportunity for faculty, staff, and students within our region to share summary details about their research and community engaged projects so that we can:

  • Connect: Understand the landscape of what work has already been done, what is on the horizon, and how to create synergies between stakeholders;
  • Catalyze: Create engagement and accelerate action from connecting a network of researchers, practitioners, and decision-makers; and 
  • Communicate: Share progress and solicit feedback to ensure meaningful progression and to scale impact.

Bennett Peji

Meet Designer-in-Residence Bennett Peji

When Bennett Peji was asked to join The Design Lab as a Designer-in-Residence, he immediately said yes. “It was a natural fit,” he explains. “The Design Lab is composed of so many talented people, both in leadership and in its students, who have tremendous technical abilities, but also a big heart for using that expertise for the greater good.” Peji works with the Community team at The Design Lab, working on ways to define what it means for San Diego to be a global city. He is the Chief Innovation Officer at several businesses and Chairman of California Humanities. “Seeing us all collectively as being a very unique region in the world is one distinguishing factor in developing the opportunities that we have here. My role is to be a connector and a bridge builder to organizations who are like-minded. Like-minded in terms of seeing our region holistically and working for more ways to collaborate and create greater economic opportunities and access.”

Peji is a walking example of practicing what he preaches in order to present San Diego as a unique, diverse, global city. He emphasizes that it is not enough to just be welcoming. We must be truly inclusive. “The real work is to include and empower the folks who have never been to the table, who don't think and act and see the world the way we do, so that we can all have a more profound way of looking at the problems.” To do this, Peji has not been afraid to be the one swimming upstream. “We all have to find our way in this world called America and do the best we can. But since I’ve been on this journey for so long now, it has become so clear that it is not about assimilating [but instead] finding your own voice and expressing your own unique and distinct identity.”

I am proud to be one of the developers of what is today called human-centered design. That is design that always starts off understanding the needs, capabilities, and desires of people. It has four basic principles, all four of which are being violated by today’s recycling craze.

Recycling is broken. There’s little clarity about what can and can’t be recycled, and the rules change from one city to the next, and sometimes even within the same city. According to the World Bank, we produce 1.4 billion tons of waste a year worldwide, a figure that’s expected to increase to 2.4 billion tons by 2025. Waste is an enormous problem that needs to be addressed if we’re going to prevent the worst effects of climate change. But recycling is the wrong solution.
